SMP Project Engineer

The SMP Project Engineer will be responsible for the successful delivery of major procurement packages for a large-scale infrastructure project, ensuring technical compliance with site requirements, delivery ahead of schedule, and execution within budget. This role requires strong mechanical engineering expertise, proven experience in iron ore projects, and a proactive, collaborative approach to managing contractor performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the delivery of major SMP procurement packages from specification through to site handover.
  • Ensure all procured equipment and materials meet technical specifications, site standards, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Track and manage procurement schedules to deliver in line with the overall project schedule.
  • Ensure all procurement activities remain within approved budget allocations.
  • Review and approve technical documentation to ensure compliance with project design, specifications, and standards. Work alongside Technical Engineering teams and site stakeholders to ensure the equipment is fit for purpose.
  • Liaise closely with design teams to ensure constructability and maintainability considerations are incorporated.
  • Manage technical queries and deviations with vendors and contractors.
  • Support Construction Team with technical input as required.
  • Lead engagement with contractors to ensure performance aligns with contractual obligations and safety standards.
  • Monitor contractor progress, resolve issues, and proactively manage risks to avoid schedule or cost impacts.
  • Foster strong collaboration between internal stakeholders, suppliers, and contractors to achieve delivery milestones.
  • Provide regular progress updates to the Project Manager.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation and records for compliance and audit purposes.
  • Contribute to project risk management processes and develop mitigation strategies.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Minimum 5–8 years’ experience in project engineering roles for major SMP scopes.
  • Proven track record in managing procurement packages from specification through to delivery.
  • Strong understanding of SMP installation requirements and site construction standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to work proactively while fostering teamwork.
  • Previous experience working on large-scale iron ore infrastructure projects in the Pilbara.
