About the Role
An opportunity exists for an experienced Health & Safety Principal to lead and influence safety outcomes across complex, high‑risk project environments. This senior role is responsible for establishing, embedding and continuously improving health and safety systems across construction, commissioning and early operations phases.
You will act as the senior H&S lead, partnering closely with engineering, project delivery, operations and contracting partners to ensure regulatory compliance, critical risk control effectiveness and strong safety culture across all phases of work.
This role is well suited to a safety leader with deep experience in process safety, critical risk management and major hazard environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and implement the project Health & Safety strategy in alignment with organisational standards and legislative requirements
- Provide expert advice to senior leaders on health and safety risks, controls, resourcing and performance
- Act as a subject matter expert in critical risk management, process safety and serious injury/fatality prevention
- Develop and govern operational risk registers and critical control frameworks
- Lead and participate in HAZID, HAZOP, Bowtie and LOPA studies, ensuring actions are closed effectively
- Implement and oversee critical control verification and assurance programs
- Embed H&S requirements into engineering design, procurement activities and contractor scopes
- Review and assure safety‑critical deliverables including hazardous areas, safeguarding, traffic interaction and high‑risk work controls
- Support commissioning and operational readiness activities, including pre‑start‑up safety reviews
- Maintain strong site presence across construction and commissioning activities
- Review and assure incident investigations using ICAM or equivalent methodologies
- Ensure contractor H&S plans, JHAs, SWMS and permit systems meet required standards
- Lead regulatory engagement, audits and compliance activities
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives across safety systems, reporting and workforce engagement
You are a confident, credible safety leader with the ability to influence across senior and operational levels. You bring a practical, solutions‑focused approach and are comfortable operating in complex, high‑risk environments.
Key Experience & Capability:
- 10+ years’ experience in Health & Safety within mining, energy, chemicals or heavy process industries
- Strong background in process safety and critical risk management
- Demonstrated experience in high‑risk construction and commissioning environments
- Experience with major hazard facilities, dangerous goods and gas environments
- Proven ability to lead assurance programs and complex risk assessments
- Strong stakeholder engagement and contractor management capability
- Tertiary qualification in Workplace Health & Safety, Engineering or Process Safety
- Strong working knowledge of WHS and Mine Safety legislation
- Lead Investigator (ICAM or equivalent)
- WHS Management Systems Internal Auditor qualification
- Project or operational readiness experience highly regarded
- Current C Class Driver’s Licence
