A specialist engineering consultancy is seeking a Functional Safety Engineer to join its growing safety and risk team. This position offers exposure to a diverse portfolio of projects across heavy industry, energy, resources and critical infrastructure environments.
Working alongside experienced process safety, automation and engineering professionals, you'll help clients identify, assess and manage operational risks while ensuring compliance with recognised functional safety standards.
The opportunity This is a consultancy-focused role where no two projects are the same. You'll be involved in everything from early project studies through to detailed design reviews, operational risk assessments and ongoing asset support.
You'll provide independent technical advice and work closely with engineering teams, asset owners and operators to improve safety performance across complex industrial facilities.
Responsibilities
- Facilitate risk assessment workshops including HAZOP, LOPA and SIL studies
- Deliver functional safety assessments throughout the SIS lifecycle
- Develop and review Safety Requirement Specifications (SRS)
- Prepare Functional Safety Management Plans and verification documentation
- Conduct compliance, gap and audit reviews against industry standards
- Support safety-instrumented system design and validation activities
- Provide technical guidance on risk reduction strategies and protection layers
- Interface with multidisciplinary engineering and operational teams
- Engineering qualifications in Electrical, Mechatronic, Process, Chemical, Instrumentation or a related discipline
- Experience in functional safety, process safety or industrial risk management
- Working knowledge of IEC 61508, IEC 61511 and related industry standards
- Experience facilitating formal risk workshops within industrial environments
- Strong technical writing and stakeholder engagement skills
- Exposure to control systems, instrumentation or automation projects would be highly regarded
- Functional Safety certification or a commitment to obtaining certification
