We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join an established engineering team, translating mechanical concepts into detailed designs, fabrication drawings and functional prototype equipment. This is a hands-on role offering involvement throughout the design lifecycle, from initial concept development and detailed design through to manufacture, assembly, testing and continuous improvement. The successful candidate will bring extensive Autodesk Inventor experience, strong mechanical design fundamentals and a practical understanding of manufacturing processes, with the ability to deliver reliable, fit-for-purpose designs in a dynamic engineering environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead mechanical design activities from initial requirements and concept development through detailed design, drawing release, fabrication and continuous improvement.
- Develop complex 3D parts and assemblies, production-ready 2D drawings and bills of materials using Autodesk Inventor.
- Apply design-for-manufacture, assembly, operation and maintenance principles, considering materials, tolerances, interfaces and fabrication methods.
- Collaborate with engineers, workshop personnel, fabricators and suppliers to resolve technical challenges and optimise designs.
- Prepare and manage technical drawings, specifications, design records and engineering changes, maintaining document control through Autodesk Vault.
- Support prototype procurement, fabrication, assembly and testing, incorporating feedback and design modifications as required.
- Coordinate external design and fabrication activities, including scope development, technical queries and supplier deliverable reviews.
- Manage competing priorities while maintaining design accuracy, quality and compliance with relevant engineering standards.
- Minimum five years' relevant mechanical design experience.
- Extensive hands-on Autodesk Inventor experience, including complex multipart assemblies and detailed engineering drawings.
- Proven ability to take mechanical designs from concept through to manufacture and physical build.
- Strong understanding of machining, sheet metal, welding and other manufacturing processes.
- Sound knowledge of mechanical design principles, including material selection, fits and tolerances, drawing standards and GD&T where applicable.
- Ability to work autonomously, identify technical constraints and adapt to changing requirements and priorities.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across engineering, workshop and supplier teams.
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Experience developing prototypes, test rigs or specialised one-off equipment.
- Familiarity with Autodesk Vault, engineering change control and formal drawing release processes.
- Background in research and development or environments involving iterative design, build and testing.
- Exposure to rapid prototyping and practical workshop operations.
